HLTAID011 & HLTWHS005 – First Aid & Manual Handling for Personal Care Workers

Designed for healthcare workers, support workers and personal care professionals
This combined First Aid and Manual Handling course is designed specifically for healthcare workers and personal care professionals who perform manual tasks as part of their role.
Participants will develop the skills and knowledge required to safely complete manual handling tasks, recognise workplace hazards and respond effectively to first aid emergencies.
The course covers safe manual handling techniques alongside essential first aid skills including CPR, defibrillator use and emergency response procedures.
Participants will learn how to provide immediate care during workplace and community emergencies until professional medical assistance arrives.
Training is delivered in accordance with relevant legislation, workplace requirements, Australian standards and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
This course is delivered as a blended program combining online learning with face-to-face practical training and assessment.

- Practical face-to-face training and assessment
- Manual handling demonstrations based on workplace scenarios
- Training available at your workplace or a Heart Restart training venue
Participants will learn how to:
- Recognise hazardous manual tasks and workplace risks
- Apply safe manual handling techniques and body mechanics
- Reduce the risk of injury during workplace activities
- Perform CPR on adults and infants
- Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Manage common first aid emergencies
- Respond to serious medical conditions until emergency services arrive
- Complete workplace incident documentation requirements
The course provides practical skills suitable for healthcare, disability, aged care, community services and personal care environments.
Course durations may vary depending on the delivery method and participant requirements. The following are the minimum possible durations.
Refresher Face-to-Face Training
Practical training and assessment session.
Duration: Minimum 8 hours 30 minutes face-to-face contact time
Blended Delivery
Online learning combined with face-to-face practical training and assessment.
Duration: Minimum 8 hours 30 minutes face-to-face contact time
Full Face-to-Face Delivery
Complete classroom-based delivery including theory, practical skills and assessments.
Duration: Minimum 11 hours 30 minutes face-to-face contact time
Online Learning with Face-to-Face Assessment
Complete online theory before attending practical assessment.
Duration: Minimum 1 hour 30 minutes face-to-face contact time
Participants will complete both written and practical assessment tasks to demonstrate their first aid and manual handling skills.
Practical First Aid Assessment Activities
- Perform CPR on an adult including AED use and recovery position
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage anaphylaxis emergencies
- Manage asthma emergencies
- Manage choking incidents
- Manage bleeding, shock and minor wound treatment
- Manage nosebleeds
- Manage fractures and dislocations
- Manage sprains and strains
- Respond to envenomation including snake and funnel-web spider bites
- Complete a first aid incident report form
Manual Handling Assessment Activities
- Horizontal movement task based on workplace requirements
- High-to-low movement task based on workplace requirements
- Low-to-high movement task based on workplace requirements
- Complete workplace risk assessment documentation
Theory Assessment
Participants will complete a written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
Per Participant
Includes training, assessment and nationally recognised certification upon successful completion.
Participants must have the physical capacity to complete the practical demonstrations required for this course.
- Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor
- Demonstrate rescue breathing techniques on training manikins
- Safely perform manual handling activities using appropriate equipment, posture and techniques
To complete the online pre-course learning component, students will need access to:
- Computer
- Smartphone or tablet
- Reliable internet connection
When you successfully complete this course, you will receive a Statement of Attainment containing the following nationally recognised units:
HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
HLTAID010 – Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid
HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely
Recommended renewal periods:
- HLTAID009 CPR: Refresh every 12 months
- HLTAID010 Basic Emergency Life Support: Renew every 36 months
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: Renew every 36 months
- HLTWHS005 Conduct Manual Tasks Safely: No renewal period applicable
First aid certification renewal recommendations align with the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
